Rational Emotional Behaviour Therapy
Rational emotional behaviour therapy is a therapeutic counselling to be done by a professional counsellor to help the students and patients to think positive rather than negative thinkings and illogical beliefs.Through this therapy or education the student or patient can overcome from their mental illness and psychological problems such as anger, depression, anxiety etc
The Professional counsellor follow a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as the therapeutic technique. The theory behind this technique is that a person behaviour or character is based on their emotional thinkings or the persons mood is directly related to his or her thoughts. Thus we can say that individual's beliefs and thinking affects their emotions.
The approach of rational behaviour therapy is successful in every case. The theory behind this therapy is ABC frame work,ie,an ABC principle
Where 'A' is Activating event
'B' is belief or thought process
'E' is emotional consequences
Here by applying this principle the counsellor will activate an event to improve the cognitive thinking of the patient or student
A=Activating event (Eg:an unpleasant event such as failing in the mid-term examination)
If the Patient thinks negatvely (Irrational thoughts):
B=Beliefs(Negative) (eg:"I am useless or waste and I will never going to pass this test)
By the application of this principle the counsellor helps the student/patient think positively,ie.in a cognitive manner
B=Beliefs(Positive)(eg:Why i fail in this exam, because i didnt studied or i didnt take any effort for study,so i fail for this time,if i try i can do my level best and can gain good marks in every exams)
C=Emotional 'consequences' he /she will go to a state of depression
By applying this principle he/she think positively for a new chance for getting good marks, but because of this fail he/she had an disappointment or sadness
Here in this principle there is an Irrationality VS Rationality
Instead of negative thoughts the counsellor is helping the student/patient for positive thinkings.
War between Rational(positive) and Irrational(Negative) thoughts
Here as a professional counsellor we have to maintain a good therapeutic communication with the client, and we have to use our knowledge and skills to help the client to avoid the irrational beliefs
thus we can say that C=A+B
C(Emotional consequences)=A(Activating Events)+B(Beliefs/thoughts)
