Heritability is the proportion of phenotypic variation that is explained by genetic variation.

Traits are nothing but characters that are controlled by genes present on chromosomes. Gene is segment of DNA. Genes are transferred along the chromosomes, as chromosomes are trasferred from parents to progeny. During transfer of chromosomes, crossing over occurs which results varitions in progeny traits.
