Bioenergetics: What features of avian and mammalian physiology promote their high metabolic rates? How do they use this additional energy? (For each question, provide at least 3 answers involving at least 2 physiological systems)
Physiological Features Promoting High Metabolism |
Physiological Features Requiring High Metabolism |
Avian and Mammals have organ system level of organisation.
Physiological Features Promoting High Metabolism
1. Cardiac physiology: Heart requires continuous O2 supply for its function pumping. If there is any blockage or atheromas, then ishchemia may occur in heart tissue leads to mayocardial infarction.
2. Brain: It also requires persistent O2 supply for proper functioning of different parts. Blockage in carotid artery may leads to tissue damage in some parts of brain.
Both promote high metabolism for consistent energy supply.( O2 is required for ATP production)
Physiological Features Requiring High Metabolism
1. Mammals and Avians are homoiothermous. It requires very large amount of energy to maintain constant body temperature inspite of variation in the temperature of the surrounding environment.
2. Locomotory takes place place through muscle contraction. Muscle contraction requires energy in form of ATP for actin and myosin interaction.
