Dumping syndrome and Gastroparesis, describe each condition here and discuss nutrition care for each case

Dumping syndrome is also known as rapid gastric emptying.It is a medical conditions in which group of symptoms may result or can develop after gastric surgery due to rapid delivery of nutrients to the small bowel. It may result after many gastric (stomach) operations such as fundoplication, gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery. Dumping syndrome usually occurs when one consumes food or drinks that are high in sugar, fatty food, fried food etc. In dumping syndrome symptoms can appear either within minutes of a meal (Early dumping) or few hours later (late dumping). In dumping syndrome one manifested by symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, blushing, irritability, palpitations, diarrhoea etc. NUTRITION CARE FOR A PERSON WITH DUMPING SYNDROME:- 1) Avoid the food that is rich in sugar or fats alone. 2) chewing the food thoroughly and eat slowly. 3) Always avoid eating and drinking at the same time. 4) Always use fibre rich diets. 5) cut food into very small pieces and chew thoroughly before eating as well as drink liquids 35 to 45 minutes after eating. 6) Eating 5 to 6 small meal each day. 7) Eat a source of protein in each meal such as red meat, eggs, cheese, yogurt and peanut butter are the good sources. GASTROPARESIS:- It is also known by delayed gastric emptying. In gastroparesis the food does not move from stomach to small intestine as quickly as it should. In other terms it is a motility disorder which affects the stomach muscles and prevents proper stomach emptying. CAUSES for gastroparesis:-. ✓ injury to the vagus nerve due to sugery on oesophagus, stomach, small intestine ✓hypothyroidism. ✓ Autoimmune disorder. ✓ nervous system disorder such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. SYMPTOMS in gastroparesis is manifested by sharp abdominal pain, bloating, discomfort, nausea and vomiting. NUTRITION CARE FOR A PERSON WITH GASTROPARESIS:- 1) Avoid foods that may not be easily chewed such as broccoli, popcorn, seeds, nuts, corn. 2) Eating a low fibre diet because fibre delays gastric emptying. 3) Avoid food high in fats because fat can delay in gastric emptying. 4) Eat smaller and more frequent food. 5) Taking fluids throughout the meal. 6) Sitting upright and walking for 1 to 2 hours after meal may help in emptying of meal from stomach.
