In this discussion, Please review each case.
1). Provide a summary listing of three self-care/community strategies to improve health and wellness with the rationale for the selection.
2). Identify two potential barriers to your strategies
3). How each can be overcome.
Cases: Case 1: Mr. D. is a 28-year-old single man who lives in a large city and works as a delivery truck driver. He is Native American. He was just diagnosed with diabetes and will be insulin dependent. He is very close with his family and likes to eat the foods from his culture. His sister has diabetes as does his mother. They both do not need insulin and do not manage their diabetes very well. Mr. D. is overweight but not obese. His typical form of recreation is to go to ball games and family picnics. He is also a moderate drinker; mostly beer and wine. He usually does not go to the doctor but did this time because he was feeling iller as the months had passed. He is not happy with the diagnosis and all that he will have to do such as change his diet, exercise, learn how to give himself insulin, etc.
1. Self care is the whole gamut of adaptive behaviours and using the knowledge about health to manage one’s own health and to understand when to seek support from a healthcare professional. In case of Mr.B’s health, the use of self-care as a treatment module would lead to effective control of his diabetic condition. Moreover, community intervention in the form of encouragement and constant check by his peers with whom he plays ball games and family members can help further promote his attempts at following healthy life choices.
Empowering patients to care for their own health makes health care exponentially more sustainable. Firstly, Healthy lifestyle choices, such as appropriate rest , physical activity in the form of walking, jogging etc to maintain a healthy weight and control his blood glucose levels, would be an essential strategy. Secondly, Eating nutritious foods, avoiding sugar for adequate health would be a crucial part of his self care regimen. Mr. B would need to actively participate in all aspects of his own care, such as choices about treatment and self-management, gaining knowledge about the particular signs and symptoms of diabetes to monitor his own condition, knowing the correct dosage of insulin, etc. finally, the assistance of his family members in monitoring his diet such as limiting his consumption of foods native to his culture, etc. cooking nutritious food together on a weekly basis can help to reinforce his attempts at changing his daily routine.
2. While these strategies can help him along the path of effective treatment for chronic illness like diabetes, his self care plan can suffer a setback in the absence of beneficial public health policies and medical aids. Considering that Mr. B may have a limited income and a stressful job, such as easily accessible nursing centres for ethnic minority patients with chronic illnesses may prove as another stumbling block in following up on his regular dosage of insulin injections.
3. In order to overcome these possibilities, it is suggested that Mr, B remains in contact with his team of medical professionals and have their contact details ready and shares them with his family members, colleagues in case of any emergency with any symptom such as dizziness due to hypoglycaemia.
