Discussion 5.2: Roadblocks Discussion Topic Task: Reply to this topic
A large healthcare network consists of one hospital, three physician offices, and several outpatient clinics and specialty locations. The network implemented an EHR in its hospital and physician offices. The next phase is to integrate the outpatient clinics and specialty locations.
What are some of the roadblocks that may be encountered with this phase of the implementation that may not have been encountered previously?
What is the role of interoperability and its importance in this case?
Illustrate with an example. Please give me a Reference to show me the answer to the discussion.
The some of the roadblocks that are encountered in this phase of implementation are:
--Poor planning and its implementation.
--Absence of appropriate resources.
-- Lack of proper communication .
--Providing proper training , it is also time consuming
-- Requirement of large sum of money.
--Data privacy maintenance - the most important roadblock .
Often the company and the service provider require high level security to protect the private information of the patient from data breaching , but such service providers are not able to meet such standards, thus some or the other time causing threat to privacy of the person.
Interoperability is the use of computer and its software for the exchange and transfer of information in between providers for better storage and communication between the doctor and patients. It sums up all the information of the patient and every detail related to it.
It is important because
1) It increases the efficiency and productivity, thus decreasing the chances of the errors and hence more lives could be saved.
2)It also plays great role in collection of data of public health care, data can easily be present and can be referred fo developing a statistics in a national population.
3) It maintains the privacy and security of the patient.
4) Better patient experiences because at different sites the patients have to again and again tell the signs and symptoms, allergies, medical history and documents ,so if they are present in a record the patient will not have to experience the burden every time.
For example: Suppose a patient falls off while he /she is out for a particular occasion, he/she is admitted to the emergency but the previous details are not available, so if the person had his details saved in the software the treatment could start immediately in a effective way due to possibly knowing the cause and the previously disease he/she might be suffering from and also the current cause for bringing in the patient to the hospital.
Also the patient can be referred to the higher centres because the patient may suffer from disease of which the hospital may not have the facility, the patient may be saved in time.
