2. Jan Howe takes diphenoxylate [Lomotil] after every bowel movement for her ulcerative colitis. She complains of dry mouth. Explain a possible reason for this symptom.

Causes of constipation = There are many causes of constipation these are following -
- Insufficient intake of water causes which further cuase dehydration and its create constipation.
- Less intake of fiber diet so its cause constipation.
- Disruption of the gut flora.
- Autoimmune disease also create constipation .
- Bowel obstruction.
- Pregnancy also causes constipation.
* Non pharmacological intervention with constipation =
- Increse fluid intake and activity is the include in non pharmacological management of constipation.
- Reduce the stress level in the patient and advise the patient to be a socially.
- Decrease the use of constipation agent such as milk produts coffee, tea and alcohol.
- Advise the patient for excercise .
- Bowel training and incresed regularity.

Answer = The patient who have ulcerative colitis and takes diphenoxilate which cause dry mouth this condition cause by decreased saliva in mouth this is called xerostomia in this condition patient unable to speak and unable to eat. This symptoms create when salivary gland dysfunction because saliva maintain lubrication of oral cavity and prevent mouth from ulcer .
- In dry mouth condition the patient feel thristy so we need to patient advise adequate intake of water which increse more saliva and pateint mouth is not dry and patient not feel loss of taste and easliy able to speak.
