name the three main types of media preparation by giving an example for each
The three main types of media preparation are:
1. Basal Media - basal media is a basic nutrient media used for the bacterial cultures that do not require any specific media to be arranged for their growth and can grow on the components of the standard basal media which has basic components included for bacterial growth. The examples of basal media are nutrient agar, nutrient broth, peptone water, etc
2. Enriched media - Enriched media are the media
type which requires the addition/enrichment of additional
components in their composition such as egg protein, blood, serum,
etc. The examples of enriched media are Lowenstein-Jensen media and
blood agar. Blood agar is used for culturing Streptococci
sp.
3. Selective media - Selective media are used to
have the growth components specifically added into it to promote
the growth of a particular bacterial species and selectively
culturing the cultures of intended bacteria. Examples of selective
media are Tellurite media, MacConkey agar, Hektoen enteric agar ,
etc
