Give an overview of how Serratia Marcescens, Mycobacterium smegatis of bacteria might affect us as humans.
Serratia marcescens is recognized as an important
opportunistic pathogen causing for healthcare-associated infection
and antimicrobial resistance.
Patients most at risk include those with debilitating or
immunocompromising disorders, those treated with broad-spectrum
antibiotics and patients in ICU who are subjected to invasive
instrumentation.
The contributory factors for the spread of the hospital acquired
infections include inadequate infection control practices which are
coupled with the growing range of the modern medical
procedures.
A broad range of hospital-acquired infection caused by S.
marcescens include respiratory tract infection, urinary tract
infection, septicaemia, meningitis, pneumonia, conjunctivitis wound
and eye infections, osteomyelitis.
Regardless of the source or reservoir, the predominant mode of
spread of S. marcescens is thought to be hand-to-hand
transmission by hospital people and staffs.
