Scenario: Recently, Jon Doe suffered a serious neck injury in which his spinal cord was damaged and will not heal without stem cells. Doctors say, due to his highly unusual genetic make-up, it is almost impossible that they will ever find usable and compatible donor cells. Jon Doe’s family is looking into new methods to find something to help him. Consider what we have covered with regard to stem cells. Explain a way in which doctors could use stem cells that are a perfect match to Jon Doe's DNA (regardless of how complex his ethnic background is.) Be sure to use appropriate vocabulary in your justification of your response. Note: Human cloning is illegal and therefore cannot be used as an answer here.

Ans) As here it is said that john has been facing neck injury and his family is not able to donate due to some of the issues so for his treatment if not family it can be taken from two more ways that can be autologous ( which is a transplant using a person’s own (previously harvested) stem cells0 and allogenic (which is a transplant using stem cells donated from someone else). In john case autologous chances are less so here we can go for allogenic

Here doctors have to identify a potential donor who can give their stem cells to john involves analyzing the human leukocyte antigens (HLA), which are proteins found on the surface of the blood and in tissue cells. The HLA must be as closely matched as possible so that the john's body can ‘accept’ the new stem cells into their bone marrow. Just as important, matching at HLA will decrease the chance of the new marrow reacting against the patient, a reaction called graft versus host disease. When a stem cell transplant is successful, the new stem cells work to produce healthy red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

When a donor can’t be found within a family, then a search is performed for an unrelated donor or cord blood which has to be done here in case of john
