Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a developmental
disorder of inattention and distractibility with or without
hyperactivity.
There are three types of ADHD
- inattentive and distractible type. This type of characterized
by the following features
- Easily distracted by external stimulus
- Fails to pay attention to details
- Often loses things necesary for a particular task
- Cannot follow instructions properly ( though is able to
understand them)
- Often doesn't appear to listen to what is being said.
- Has trouble organizing tasks and activities
- Forgets daily activities
- Impulsive and hyperactive type . This type is characterized by:
- Fidgeting with hand or feet
- Doesn't remain seated in one place in the classroom when it is
expected of him/her
- Always feels restless.
- Unable to engage in leisure activities peacefully.
- Experiences discomfort in being still for extended periods of
time.
- Excessive talking.
- Inability to listen to a question completely. Has a tendency to
answer ever before the question is completely asked.
- Unable to wait for one's own turn ( example during games or
group activity)
- Interrupts others and has the tendency to taking over what
others are engaged with.
- Combined type - Has the features of both inattentive and
hyperactivity(this is the most common type of ADHD)
Characteristics of personality disorder are
- It is a maladaptive and pervasive behavior.
- It is characterized by abnormal personality traits.
- It is a life long problem.
- Personality disorders cause significant social and occupational
impairment.
- These disorders produce distress to oneself and others.
- The pattern of behaviour deviates from what is culturally
considered acceptable.
- There is no waxing and waning of symptoms.
