What is the maximum number of VLANs that can be configured on a switch supporting the 802.11Q protocol? Why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1).ANSWER:

GIVEN BELOW:

\huge \cdotA Virtual Local Area Network(VLAN) is a group of devices on one or more Local Area Network (LAN) which are configured by attaching to same wire for communication.these are located on the number of different LAN segments.

\huge \cdotVLANs are not based physical connections and they are flexible and logical.

Q)The maximum number of VLANs that can be configured on a switch supporting the IEEE 802.1Q protocol is 4096(12-bit VID field minus reserved values at each end of the range,ie;0 and 4095 provides 4096).

This is because ,VLAN 0 is reserved for frames which require Priority Code Point(PCP) ,markings and which are untagged.and VLAN 4095 is reserved for internal use within a bridge or switch and they are not seen on the frames between bridges and switches.

here,VLAN 0 and 4095 are reserved for system use.and VLAN 1 is the default VLAN.and also VLAN 2 extended to 4094.

-The protocol for supporting VLANs which is used most commonly today is IEEE 802.1Q.

-This IEEE 802.1Q protocol provides a multi vendor VLAN support with effort of multiplexing of VLANs.
