Ms. Julia Jones, a 68-year old African American woman, has just been diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma. Her ophthalmologist has explained the pathophysiology of the disease to her but is trying to select the best treatment option for her. You are the nurse working with the ophthalmologist, and Ms. Jones has asked you about the eye drops the doctor has recommended. Mrs. Jones's physician has recommended Combigan, one drop in the right eye every 12 hours. Your client has never administered eye drops and she does not know anything about the medication her ophthalmologist has prescribed. She is interested in how the medication works, the side effects, how it is administered, and why it is so important in the treatment of her glaucoma.
How medication work in laymen terms
Combign medication is used to reduce the Pressure in side the eye. It lower the Pressure inside the eye by draining increse amount of liquid drain from the eye and also reduces the production of liquid. This causes Pressure inside the eye reduction to prevent blindness.
Side effects
Blurred vision
Watery eyes, temporary itching/stinging of the eyes
Dry eyes, dry mouth
Headache, dizziness or drowsiness, cough , sore throat
Unpleasant taste in mouth, dry nose and sensitivity to light
Serious side effects are: vision change s, eye sensitivity to light, swelling/pain in eye, unexplained weight gain, shortness of breath, cold/numbness of the feet or hands,
Administration
One drop in the affected eye every 12 hourly.
1. Putting backwards of the head in sitting or standing or lying position.
2. Gentslli put down the lower eye lid with index finger
3. Squeeze only one drop or prescribed amount of drop into the lower lid pocket while looking up.
4. Close your eyes
Gently press inner canthus of the eye and blot the any excess medicine around the eye.
Why it is important
The combigan is a combination of alpha and beta blockers which help in the reduction of othalmic hypertension by decrease pressure inside the eye which is root cause of glucoma. It decrease aquour humour productions and increase the uveosclerla flow.
Because of its combination of 2 blocked and effect short acting result it is important in the treatment of the glucoma.
