ANTIBIOTICS
Antibiotics are medicines that helps to stop infections caused
by bacteria.
NEED FOR STRATEGIES
FOLLOWED IN ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT
- Antibiotic resistance : Antibiotic resistance is the ability
of the microorganisms to resist the effects of an Antibiotics to
which they were once sensitive.
Antibiotic resistance leads to higher medical costs, prolonged
hospitalization & increased mortality.
MAJOR ANTIBIOTIC
RESISTANCE
- MRSA ( Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus)
- VRE ( vancomycin resistant enterococci )
- Klebsiella Pneumoniae
- E.coli
STRATEGIES OF
HOSPITAL INFECTION CONTROL COMMITTEE MEMBER
- Hand hygiene is the mainstay of preventing the transmission of
antimicrobial- resistant pathogens so improve awareness.
- Avoid under or overdosing of antibiotics.
- Reporting of susceptibility results.
- Ensure a robust national action plan to tackle antibiotic
resistance.
- Strengthen policies, programs & implementation of infection
prevention & control measures.
- Regulate & promote the appropriate use & disposal of
quality medicines.
- Make information available on the impact of antibiotic
resistance.
- Shortening the duration of antibiotics
- Switch to oral antibiotics therapy after 3 - 4 days of
parenteral therapy. It lowers the risk of vein infections,
increases patient mobility.
- Molecular diagnostic methods can expedite pathogens
specification.
- Give special attention to WORLD ANTIMICROBIAL AWARENESS WEEK
(WAAW every year 18 - 24 November. Slogan : Handle with Care )
