If you took a commercial hybrid variety (an F1 hybrid) and collected seed (F2) and planted the F2 seeds the next season, how would the F2 progeny compare to the F1 hybrid variety?
If you take a hybrid plant say F1 and Suppose it has a genotype
HH. You planted that and allowed it to pollinate and bear fruits
and seeds.
Now, the thing to note is that, you don't know which plant
pollinated our hybrid. It can be the wild type plant growing in the
locality or it can be another hybrid planted by you in the vicinity
of the F1.
If it is pollinated by a wild type then F2 generation will be significantly different in traits. It can be improved or demoted version. It all depends upon the crossing. But the thing is sure that it will not be same as F1 generation.
If the pollination is done by Hybrid only then the there are chances that the F2 generation will have similar phenotype and genotype .
things are made simpler with the help of punette square. here I
have taken HH genotype for hybrid for convenience. It can also be
Hh( a heterozygote)
