Discussion 2.1: Employment Laws
Post a summary of a total of five laws that you read on the U.S. Department of Labor website during this learning plan. Following your summaries, post three facts that you learned from your research of employment laws that will help you in your current position as an employee and/or as a supervisor. Be sure to explain how the facts you learned will help you.
5 Laws I read on U.S Department of Labor website are as follows -
1) Workplace Safety & Health
The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act is administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Safety and health conditions in most private industries are regulated by OSHA or OSHA-approved state programs, which also cover public sector employers
2) Employee Benefit Security
The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) regulates employers who offer pension or welfare benefit plans for their employees
3) Employee Protection
Most labor and public safety laws and many environmental laws mandate whistleblower protections for employees who complain about violations of the law by their employers.
4) Garnishment of Wages
Garnishment of employee wages by employers is regulated under the Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA) which is administered by the Wage and Hour Division.
5) The Family and Medical Leave Act
Administered by the Wage and Hour Division, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires employers of 50 or more employees to give up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible employees for the birth or adoption of a child or for the serious illness of the employee or a spouse, child or parent.
These laws helped in knowing my right at work place, as I am now aware that i have a right to safe workplace and my employer can not force me to work under hazardous conditions. Further, I am now aware that I am entitled for 12 weeks unpaid, job protected leaves in case of serious illness. Third one is that I am entitled for pension benefits.
