Question explain in detail:

Explain alternation of generations in the life cycle of an organism. Use an example from the plant kingdom and discuss how that group of plants (Gymnosperm, Angiosperm, etc.) accomplishes reproduction by alternation of generations.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans.All the stages through which an organism passes from zygote of one generation to the zygote of next generation constitute its lifecycle.

The life cycles of sexually reproducing plants follow a pattern of alternation between a haploid, sexual generation called gametophyte with a diploid, asexual generation called sporophyte.

This phenomenon of alternation between gametophyte (n) and sporophyte (2n) in the life cycle of a plant is called alternation of generations .

Alternation of generation in Gymnosperms-

  • Gymnosperms show distinct alternation of generation. The sporophytic or diploid phase is dominant, long lived and independent while the gametophytic or haploid phase is short lived and is dependent on gametophytic phase.
