Definition

It is also called hemianopia.It is the partial blindness(loss of half vision).In this condition sees  either right or left side'

Causes

It may congenital or acquired

Acquired causes are brain injury(trauma, tumours,infection, stroke),lesions in optic tract and visual cortex.

Management

1.Vision restoration therapy

2. Hemianopic spectacles

3. Correction glasses to correct double vision

AIMS

1.Reduce the disability caused by hemianopia

2. Improve the patient's confidence

3. Prepare for the independendent personal life

4.Prepare for the independendent social life

Measures

Training for strengthening patient's attention for the blind field

Teach how to improve the eye movements

Provide psychological support to the patient

Familiarize the patient with routine activities

Keep client's things near to him

Arrange patient's personal care items in the bathroom

Remove all easily breakable items from the client

Provide a bright over head light to the client for reading

Keep the over head light in the bedroom while sleeping

Ask the client to check the complete vision during movement

Secure the extension cords, cables, chargers under carpet

Familiarize the client with environment

Advise them to participate in social activities

Take care of the client while walking in unfamiliar areas

Encourage the client to use supportive device (walking stick)while moving

Encourage the client to do maximum activities by himself(which improves the confidence level)

Always remind the patient to scan their vision during ambulation.
