The nurse receives an angry call from the surgeon asking why the patient is not in the pre-op holding area, and why her morning labs were not drawn. The daughter arrives and is very belligerent, blaming the hospital staff for her mothers' condition. The daughter smells of alcohol.
Drag the following actions into the correct order. (The first item should be on top.)
1. assess patient and make ready to transport to pre-op
2. explain to the surgeon that she was told to go to pre-op in the afternoon
3. check on labs to determine if they were drawn
4.meet with daughter and explain events; determine her competency to sign surgery consent
5. contact charge nurse and nursing supervising
The following is the order the actions to be taken:
1. Contact charge nurse and nursing supervising - This will help in correct information which can be informed to the surgeon and avoid any miscommunication
2. Explain to the surgeon that she was told to go to pre-op in the afternoon - This to to keep the surgeon informed so that his availability and schedule is maintained
3. Check on labs to determine if they were drawn - This is to confirm the necesssary test and lab procedures are done and the patient is assessed and prepared for the same
4. Meet with daughter and explain events; determine her competency to sign surgery consent - We need to meet and assess the daughter before surgery so that we can ensure her competency and consent related issues. As this consent aspect is very important before the patient undergoes the surgery
5. Assess patient and make ready to transport to pre-op - This is the final step and here we can ensure all the other aspects and problems are taken care of and the patient is ready to transport to pre-op
