Give one disadvantage of FT-IR microscopy and electron microscopy.

How can FT-IR spectroscopy be used in fiber analysis?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:

One disadvantage of FTIR microscopy

  • For FTIR microscopy the molecule must be active in the IR region and the compound to be tested requires a dipole movement. Molecules that donot have any dipole movement cannot be analyzed.

One disadvantage of Electron Microscopy

  • Electron microscopy cannot be used for living organisms and the sample preparation methodology could distort the material. Images that are produced using electron microscopy are black and white.

How FTIR spectroscopy can be used in fiber analysis:

  • FTIR is an useful technique for fiber identification and this feature is used in forensic science. FTIR can be used to characterize the chemical composition of fiber and a single fiber is suficient to perform analysis.
  • ATR- (Attenuated Total Reflectance) technique can be used to perform an FTIR-microscopic measurement and for ATR-FTIR the sample preparation requirements are minimal.
  • The method involves, fixing the fiber on a flat substrate (example metal plate). Fixing step is required to avoid the movement of the fiber during visual analysis and definition of the measurement positions.
