What are some different types of community resources that may be beneficial to patients (and their family members) who have experienced a burn injury.
Community resources for patients with burn injury and for their family members :
Burn is a physical injury caused by heat , cold , electricity , radiation or caustic chemicals. Usually Burn injuries may affect the patient physical as well as mental health and it may have a negative impact on them and their family members . For an optimal recovery, they need not only medical interventions , but also continous support ,guidance and assistance, especially in case of 3rd burns.
The major community resources and support groups in United States for the burn victims and their family members are:
National organisations like ,
* Phoenix Society of Burn Survivors : Major, non- profit organisation to help burn survivors . It provides support and tools for meeting the recovery challenges and for living again with fullest remaining potential.
* American Burn Association (ABA): Services include Rehabilitation, care , prevention of complications , education and burn related research activities.
* International association for Burn camps ( IABC): Provide support services for assisting the physical , psychological and social needs of Burn patient and their family members. Also organises Public awareness campaigns and burn prevention materials supply.
Commmunity resources for promoting the mental health of the Survivors and family members:
* National alliance for Mental illness (NAMI), American Psychiatric nurses association ( APNA), National institute of Mental health (NIH) etc are offering information and services regarding Post traumatic Stress Disorders ( PTSD) and its management.
Counselling services are greatly helpful for the Burn Survivors and their family members to cope up with the loss and Grief stages . organized peer support also helps in the recovery process of Burn patient.
International Association of Fire Fighters; Supports its members, who suffered with a burn injury financially, emotionally and officialy for the optimal recovery of the burn survivors among the members of IAFF.
