After reading Chapter 10: Working with Families to Support Self Esteem, choose 2 out of the 3 prompts and reply thoughtfully with reflections from the chapter and your own experiences.
1. Prompt 1: What effect do bias and stereotyping have on self-esteem? Do you think that children in target groups for bias automatically have low self-esteem? Why or why not?
2. Prompt 2: How do labels relate to self-fulfilling prophecy? Can you give examples from your own experience?
3. Prompt 3: What are some perspectives that may differ greatly from the information presented in this chapter? Can you explain at least one?
Ans 1) There is indeed lot of effect of stereotyping and biases on children. Let us take eg of Families esp. in villages of country like India where male is considered to be bread winner. Hence there is stereotype or bais against girls or even women who deliver girl. Wherever two siblings ohaving boy and girl is there, girl is under much discrimination as far as education, house hold work is concerned, Boy/son is allowed for educatoion and even house hold work is not expected from him. Due to non exposure to higher education or constant neglect does affect self esteem of girls, which they think that it is fair because they see the same everywhere
Ans2) Self fulfilling prophecy is a prediction which directly or indirectly causes itself to become true. Labelling is a theory which was develpoed by sociologist during 1960s. Here it means what people what people say about others which tend to become true. Eg. My neighbours used to say that my 2 year old boy is naughty boy (with love) and he happened to be naughty. It may be due to school pr day care or other friends.
