Should the government or an industry association regulate the carbon emissions of the data center industry as they do the airline industry?
These days lot of the business are done online which requires a data centres so day by day importance of data centres and demand of bandwidth is growing continuously and to run these data centres energy is required . According to Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), data centers used 91 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) electrical energy in 2013, which constitute for 3% of global electricity consumption and accounts for about 2 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions and it is almost same as airline industry. A study of japan says that Japans data centres would consume its entire electricity supply by 2030 if growth continues at today’s rate.
For our survivival it is necessary that environment do not degrade further and above paragraph clearly shows that data centres is degrading the environment and carbon emission should be checked and for it government or an industry association regulate the carbon emissions of the data center industry as they do the airline industry.
