Is the idea of “autonomy” (making decisions for oneself) in conflict with “shared” decision making? Why or Why Not? 3 paragraphs.
I don't think so. Its because, shared decision making is a process to enhance the ability and capability of the patient to make an autonomous decision. A patient might not be having much knowledge of a particular procedure except few assumptions. In such a situation, a clinician's advise and facts like risks and benefits of a procedure or a healthcare alternative might help the patient to make an autonomous decision.
A clinician would literally be helping the patient to come to his own decision about the health care alternatives. When the clinicians are helping the patient in making their decisions, they should focus on interests which are relevant to their choices.
Even though the nature of the question seems to have a controversial answer, when we think about it in a different aspect, we can see that both the methods work hand in hand, than creating Conflicts. Therefor, shared decision making promotes patients to achieve relational autonomy
