1. If a light bulb is hooked up to batteries, do you think the brightness of the bulb will depend on how many batteries you use? Explain why or why not

2. If two identical bulbs are hooked up in series and two more identical bulbs are hooked up in parallel, rank the four bulbs from brightest to the least bright. Explain the reasons for your rankings of all four bulbs.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1:- We can say that, brightness of bulb depends on the amount of power it is consuming.
Also, since the resistance of the bulb is fixed and also, there is fixed power rating for each bulb(that is because of the surface area of the filament of bulb).
So, using many batteries may exceed the maximum capacity of power the bulb can consume and may blow it.

2:- If two identical bulbs are hooked up in series, then they will consume equal power(P= i^2 * R) and so they will have same brightness.
Now if another two identical bulbs are connected in parallel, then all will have the equal resistance and so the distribution of current in both the branches will be the same. Hense, all the four bulb will consume same power and so,they will glow in same extent.
