Illinois has one of the highest property taxes in US region. This has come at a time when many residents are alleging that the Taxes are more than their income levels. This has forced many Illinois residents to sell theoir property and move outside the state.According to US census, around 37,508 people left Illinois. This necessarily does not mean that people are moving because of high Taxes only,it also means that the fall in employment in Illinois and better opportunities outside. The taxes were increased due to pressure in financials faced by the state.but unfortunately, burden has affected the natives who are desperate to sell their houses and leave Illinois.Statistics say that the taxes have nearly doubled in a span of 15 years from 2005 to 2015 ,but the income has seen a rise of about 31% only.
In Illinois, if you dont pay real property taxes, the county
collector can start a lawsuit in court to get a judgment and order
of sale. At the sale, the purchaser basically buys the unpaid tax
lien that exists on the home.
If you then don’t pay off the tax debt, the purchaser can
eventually get legal title to your home. You will be notified
before this happens and you’ll also be allowed a set period of time
after the sale in which to pay off the debt, so that you can then
keep your home.
The whole controversies surrounding the issue is that when people donot have the income to pay up for the taxes ,how the system will adapt to the changes and challenges.Ofcourse now there has been a rush in paying the taxes due to proposed tax reforms coming up.
