Doxirubicin is a antitumor antibiotic whichwhich is used to treat carcinoma of breast,ovary,endometrium,testicle,thyroid,lung and osteosarcoma.
It acts by blocking an enzyme called topoisomerase2,which is essential for the cancer cell to decide and grow.
Complications of doxirubicin are Nausea and vomitting,diarrhea,anemia,alopecia,dizziness,colour changes in face and nail,joint pain,stomatitis,pain abdomen,breathing difficulty,phlebitis at injection site.
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity,impaired liver function,anemia,Acute MI,Cardiomyopathy,G6PD deficiency,Pregnancy and feeding mother.
Interaction:Doxirubici interacts with digoxin,stavudin,zidovudin,edoxaban,it will result in delayed excretion of medicine from the body.
Medication administered through intravenous injection(Central venous or peripherlal IV line)
Nursing intervention:
IV cannulation with large bore IV cannula if possible,because chance of phlebitis is more with injection doxirubicin
Educate the patient to inform if any burning sensation at injection site due to extravasation.
Advice patient to drink plenty of water
Advice to avoid going into crowded areas.
Patient education:
Educate about side effects of medicine
Educate the patient that hair loss is temporary
Educate to avoid going into crowd as there is risk of infection.
Plenty of fluid to consumed.
Educate to monitor for any colour changes or pain at injection site,if any so,advice to contact hospital immediately.
Evaluation of effectiveness of medication:
Slowing down in the progress of tumor
Betterment in health of the patient.
