1. If Mr. Ortega is my patient, action (s) to be taken are to provide quality care to my patient to the extent of which the services provided improves the desired health outcomes.
In order to achieve this, the service or care provided by me must be safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable and patient-centred.”
Safe. Delivering health care that minimizes risks and harm to service users, including avoiding preventable injuries and reducing medical errors.
Effective. Providing services based on scientific knowledge and evidence-based guidelines.
Timely. Reducing delays in providing and receiving health care.
Efficient. Delivering health care in a manner that maximizes resource use and avoids waste.
Equitable. Delivering health care that does not differ in quality according to personal characteristics such as gender, race, ethnicity, geographical location or socioeconomic status.
Patient-centred. Providing care that takes into account the preferences and aspirations of individual service users and the culture of their community.
2. What factors would be important to you in making decisions about Mr. Ortega’s care?
The 3 important aspects of care for my patients were
· the perceived competence of their caregivers,
· the empathy and respectfulness of caregivers, and
· the adequacy of information sharing.
The 3 least important aspects of care were convenience, comprehensiveness of services, and the treatment environment.
Important factors while making decisions are
· Decision characteristics (e.g. complexity, urgency etc)
· Decision maker characteristics (e.g. demographics, diversity, tenure)
· Information (e.g. availability of tacit and explicit knowledge)
· Economic factors (e.g. financial environment)
· Politics and regulation (e.g. extent of government involvement in decision making)
