You have just received report from Kyle’s primary nurse as you will be covering for the nurse the rest of the shift. The reporting nurse tells you that Kyle last had Tylenol at home around 10:00. You review the MAR and Kyle’s vital signs. You walk into Kyle’s room to introduce yourself, and you note he has taken his oxygen nasal cannula off and is coughing. His mother is at his bedside watching television. You state, “Kyle it appears you are having some distress. Does it feel difficult to breathe?” Kyle states, “Yes, it feels like my lungs are all clogged up.” You obtain an albuterol nebulizer for Kyle and begin chest physiotherapy. As you are providing chest physiotherapy, you take the opportunity to demonstrate to Kyle’s mother correct placement of the hands and movement required to perform chest physiotherapy. When you are finished providing chest physiotherapy, Kyle states that he often feels better when his nebulizers are accompanied by physiotherapy. You are not confident Kyle will have someone available to provide chest physiotherapy as often as he needs at home so you contact social work to obtain a high frequency chest compression vest for the patient’s home.
