D. CHOLINERGIC BLOCKERS: Define anticholinergics. List two (2) examples. List six (6) pharmacological properties of atropine. (2 points) List eight (8) nursing actions when safely administering cholinergic blockers. Include 2 for estimate, 3 for intervention, 2 for client education, and 1 for evaluation.
PLEASE USE APA FORMAT 7TH EDITION REFLECTIONS, IMPLICATIONS
1. Anticholinergic is a group of substances that blocks the
action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at synapses in the
central and the peripheral nervous system, and, in broad terms,
neuromuscular junction.
Eg.Atropine (Atropen),belladonna alkaloids,benztropine
mesylate(Cogentin),clidinium,cyclopentolate (Cyclogyl),darifenacin
(Enablex),dicylomine,fesoterodine (Toviaz).
2. Atropine is a medication used to treat certain types of nerve
agent and pesticide poisonings as well as some types of slow heart
rate, and to decrease salivaproduction during surgery. It is
typically given intravenously or by injection into a muscle.Eye
drops are also available which are used to treat uveitis and early
amblyopia. The intravenous solution usually begins working within a
minute and lasts half an hour to an hour.Large doses may be
required to treat some poisonings.
3. Administer oral drug on empty stomach to decrease nausea and
vomiting. If drug is given intravenously, administer slowly to avoid
severe cholinergic effects.
