how to make a mole fraction of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 ethyl acetate and cyclohexane having a total volume of 5 or 10 ml

Solutions

Expert Solution

Mole fraction = moles of a component/total moles

molar mass of ethylacetate = 88.11 g/mol

molar mass of cyclohexane = 84.16 g/mol

considering volume = mass for 10 ml = 10 g

Total mass = 88.11 + 84.16 = 172.28 g/mol

lets say we take 2.5 g of ethylacetate and 7.5 g of cyclohexane

moles of ethylacetate = 2.5 g/88.11 g/mol = 0.0284 mol

moles of cycohexane = 7.5 g/84.16 g/mol = 0.0891 mol

Total moles = 0.1175 mols

Mass of ethylacetate = moles of ethylacetate x molar mass of ethylacetate

Mass of cyclohexane = moles of cyclohexane x molar mass of cyclohexane

Now,

for 0.25 mole fraction of ethylacetate and 0.75 mole fraction cyclohexane

moles of ethylacetate = 0.25 x 0.1175 = 0.0294 mol

moles of cyclohexane = 0.75 x 0.1175 = 0.0881 mol

for 0.50 mole fraction of ethylacetate and 0.50 mole fraction cyclohexane

moles of ethylacetate = 0.50 x 0.1175 = 0.05875 mol

moles of cyclohexane = 0.50 x 0.1175 = 0.05875 mol

for 0.75 mole fraction of ethylacetate and 0.25 mole fraction cyclohexane

moles of ethylacetate = 0.75 x 0.1175 = 0.0881 mol

moles of cyclohexane = 0.25 x 0.1175 = 0.0294 mol
