NaClO3 + H2O + I2 --> HIO3 + NaCl

?please show all steps

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a) moL NaClO3 + (b) moL H2O + (c) moL I2 -------> (d) moL HIO3 + (e) moL NaCl

First step: For each element give an equation (arrow can be used how equal sign).

Na: 1(a) = 1(e)

Cl: 1(a) = 1(e)

O: 3(a) + 1(b) = 3(d)

H: 2(b) = 1(d)

I: 2(c) = 1(d)

Second step: Give minimun natural number an letter more representative.

If:(d) is equal to (2)

Then:

d = 2, and 2(b) =1 (d), (b) = 1(d)/2, (b)=1x2/2, b = 1

d = 2, and 2(c) =1 (d), (c) = 1(d)/2, (c)=1x2/2, c = 1

d = 2, b = 1, and 3(a) + 1(b) =3(d), (a) = [3(d) - 1(b)]/3, (a)=[3(2) - 1(1)]/3, (a)=[5]/3 a = 5/3

a = 5/3, and 1(a) = 1(e), (e) = (a) = 5/3, (e) = 5/3

Third step: multiplicy by same denominator, and balanced at equation.

a = 5/3 x 3 = 5 ------> a = 5

b = 1 x 3 = 3 ------> b = 3

c = 1 x 3 = 3 ------> c = 3

d = 2 x 3 = 6 ------> d = 6

e = 5/3 x 3 = 5 ------> e = 5

(a) moL NaClO3 + (b) moL H2O + (c) moL I2 -------> (d) moL HIO3 + (e) moL NaCl

5 moL NaClO3 + 3 moL H2O + 3 moL I2 -------> 6 moL HIO3 + 5 moL NaCl
