Figure 8-16 on page 254 in your textbook lists traditional, evolving, and emerging technologies used to capture and enter data into a system. List 10 actual examples with descriptions of innovative methods to capture data. To get you started look at law enforcement, agriculture, GPS, hand held devices, manufacturing, RFID, barcoding among other numerous fields. You can also think about devices/methods that are actually used, are unexpected, or cutting edge. In your description make sure you describe how this method is better, faster, less expensive, etc. than current methods. List sources that you used. Record your answers in a Word document. There is no minimum word or page count. Each example must describe the application and explain how this method is better than other methods (a paragraph).
#1) Case Studies
A case study is a thorough description of a process, structure, or experience at one organization. Case studies use surveys, statistics about usage, and qualitative data collection techniques. While performing a research quantitative data is gathered first and then the qualitative strategies are used.
ex-Encyclopedia:It is the website which has a huge collection of information about many topics. The information can be useful for writing a case study.
#2)Automated Data Capture:
Automated data capture involves the use of computerized technology to capture data. This method has a high initial cost on account of the initial investment required as for instance, the purchase of technology but as the project proceeds, is found to lower the operating costs significantly on account of low manpower requirement. Further, with the majority of data today existing in electronic forms, the cost of using such automated technology has also reduced. Hence, there has been proliferation of techniques and technology of automated methods of data capturing, each suitable for a particular type data or source of data. Automated data capture includes the use of different technologies such as OCR, ICR, OMR and others, which are individually described here.
#3) Checklists
The checklist is a list structure of points which needs to be observed or evaluated. Using this technique, you can mark the presence or absence of criteria or can note down short comments about a topic.
ex:-Checkli:
It is a free checklist maker. It provides templates for creating checklists. It has free as well as a business plan. The business plan has many features like creating checklists, assigning & scheduling, and tracking everything.
4#)Magnetic Ink character Recognition (MICR):
It is a data capture technology capable of recognizing characters. It involves the recognition of specially formatted characters that are printed in magnetic ink, by a machine. The technology is mainly used by banking industry to speed up the processing of cheques and other documents. The added advantage of this method is that humans can also read the data as well.
5#)Voice- Recognition:
Voice recognition is the process of converting speech into text. The text can be simple text or can be a set of commands. It finds application in dictation systems, small controlling systems and certain processes of data entry and word-processing environment.
#6) Interviews
An interview is another data collection technique.
For collecting the data through this technique, interviews are performed in groups or on a one-on-one basis. During interviews, the data can be collected using stenography, video recordings, audio recordings, or written notes.
ex:
Sony ICD ux560:
It is an audio recording tool. It performs the recording in the LPCM format.
#7)Surveys
Surveys are performed through questionnaires. A standard set of questions are used for performing the survey of any specific topic.
ex: Google Forms:
It is a tool for creating survey forms. It is a free tool for google account holders. You can use the themes provided. The tool will allow you to create a new form and has collaboration features as well.
8#)Web-Data Capture:
Data capture from web involves the capture of data from electronic forms through internet or intranet.
ex:browsers
browers are used to surf in the internet. It saves cookies which actually data capture due which we get suggestions while surfing the internet.
9#)Data Collection Tools in Healthcare:
In the Healthcare industry, the most common data collection methods include manual data collection, administrative data from the electronic patient management system, and reviewing the medical record of a patient.
ex: Instant Data Entry Application (IDEA):
It is the tool for creating and deploying the web application for data collection. You will be able to manage all the created applications at a central place. This application will provide you with a central location to set up mapping and lookup lists
10#)Smart-Cards:
Smart cards are pocket-sized cards with embedded integrated circuits. They can function on contact or can be contactless. They contain more memory than magnetic cards and can be used for data related to personal identification, authentication, biometrics etc. Upon interaction with suitable reading devices they enable automated information transfer and data access.
