Identify all of the types of bonding in tungsten(W) and polyethylene(PE).

Explain why the melting point of W is so different from PE.

Define a molecular solid, and give an example (stating the different types of bonding present)

Which bond types are directional and which are non-directional

Solutions

Expert Solution

In tungsten : Metallic bond

Polypropylene : covalent bonding

Metallic bonds are much more stronger than a covalent bonds as metallic bonding can be considered as a large lattice of catio and delozalized electrons. A force will be required to overcome this force. So, Tungsten has a higher melting point.

-------------------------------------

A molecular solid is a solid composed of molecules held together by the Van der Waals forces. Example : hydrocarbons , sugar, solid CO2 etc

---------------------------------------------

Ionic bonding = non-directional

Covalent = directional
