Functional groups dictate the properties of the molecule as they are much more reactive than the C-C or C-H bonds.
For example, -COOH is carboxylic acid functional group. A H can be easily removed from -COOH. So, any compound that contain this group acts as acid.
-NH2 group has a lone pair of electron on N and it acts as a Lewis base. Thus any compound which has -NH2 group attached to it is basic in nature.
