Chapter one in the textbook Professional Nursing Eight edition by Beth Perry Black discusses nursing today and the evolving health care environment.
Apart from Telehealth and informative Identify two evolving practice opportunities for nurses..
Telehealth is becoming a vital process for providing access to
cost-effective quality care to patients at a distance. As such, it
is important for nurse practitioners, often the primary providers
for rural and disadvantaged populations, to develop the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes needed to utilize telehealth technologies in
practice.
Telehealth programs have been used to provide content that focuses
on 1) defining telehealth, 2) telehealth etiquette, 3)
interprofessional collaboration, 4) regulations, 5) reimbursement,
6) security/Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA), 7) ethical practice in telehealth, and 8) satisfaction
Although telemedicine has been utilized for many years, it has historically been used primarily by physicians. In recent years, telemedicine has been demonstrating its growing potential in advanced nursing practice in terms of economy, efficacy, and quality of care. When used appropriately, telemedicine complements advanced nursing practice in cost-effective ways and improves healthcare access to the populations served. Incorporating telemedicine into the advanced nursing practice can be rewarding for both clinicians and their patients. Because of the high variability that exists among state regulations and payer reimbursements, clinicians are advised to verify their respective Board of Nursing Examiners, State, and payers' policies prior to investing in the establishment of telemedicine in practice.
