Before answering, let me tell that links should not be provided in the question. Since I got the topic easily on my own by searching on youtube, i am answering this question!

Federal means government, which is used to describe the government of U.S as a whole but this is very different from what federalism is!

The power is divided between the government of US and government of individual. The national government is sometimes called federal government and state governmen is just called state government. Hence, called federation of states.

In the federal system, national government takes care of something like war, conquering new places etc. and state government takes care of different types of licenses, tariffs etc. They both handle taxes called Federal taxes and state taxes.

There was two type of federalism:-

1)Dual Federalism

2)Corporative Federalism

Dual federalism usually refer to the period of American history that’s stretches from 1788-1937 regime of dual federal where government power was strictly divided by state(which took care of corporate law, inheritance law, public health, education ) and national ( which took care of taxes, owning land, controls currency)

And it was seen that state has a lot of power of jurisdiction. It is also called layer cake federalism.

Then the Great depression happened and changed the federalism, bringing corporative federalism and started defining goals. Federal use to give states grant in aid and is called it categorical as it had purpose like transforming education, health etc. The aid was given using some mathematical formula. It was seen that states which had maximum number of poor people they got maximum amount of aid. The aid was given in blocks also called as lego. It was also called Marble cake federalism which mix the state and national federal such that is cannot be separated.

But after 1970 it was amended to was new federalism. It was with the sole purpose to give more power to states. Like states can decide where to use the aid. Devolving power from national to states.
