There were many causes of the American revolution and the key causes and effects were the founding of the colonies, the French and Indian war, taxes and laws, protest in Boston and the Boston blockade, acts which could not be tolerated, the unity among the colonies was growing, the first continental congress etc.The British needed fund after the French and Indian war and so tried to collect taxes from American colonies. The first tax was the stamp tax and the colonies refused to purchase.Next was the tax on imported goods and the colonies refused to buy imported goods.Since this boycott was hurting the British merchants British military soldiers and warships were brought and the colonies had to face a lot of tension .Five people died as a result of British firing on March 5th 1770.. This is known as Boston massacre.Due to  the protests made by the colonies all taxes were removed except the tea tax. This tea tax said that the British can only sell tea and no one else can do so.This angered the colonists and they threw a load of tea off a ship into the Boston harbour . This is known as Boston tea party. This angered the Britishers and many laws  were passed to punish the colonists known as intolerable acts. The people of Boston were ordered to keep British soldiers in their houses and feed them as a punishment.Boston port was closed and  the people of Boston were made to pay for the tea that they threw in the harbour. The intolerable act had two effects both negative and positive.Closing of the port was a negative effect . Businesses which depended on trade suffered and many people lost their jobs. The positive effect was that the colonists had to take sides and those that supported the colonists came to be known as patriots and those that supported the Britishers came to be known as Loyalists. The intolerable act made the Americans meet at Philadelphia for the first continental congress represented by twelve colonies. They demanded the repeal of the intolerable act and threatened to stop trading with Britain .They also demanded that the colonists should be trained to fight.
