1A. Is pentane hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
1B. Is pentanol hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
1C. Explain how the chemical difference between pentane and pentanol changes their relationship to water.
Answer with explanation is given below:-
Hydrophobic means water resistant , hydrophobic molecules are non polar and only dissolved in oil based substances .
Hydrophilic means water loving , hydrophilic molecules are polar and ionic and absorbed or dissolved in water .
1.A. ans. Pantane is a colorless liquid hydrocarbon , nonpolar molecule and insoluble in water. So , pantane is hydrophobic.
1.B. ans. Pentanol is an alcohol with 5 carbon atoms . Pentanol is a colorless liquid. Hydroxy group found in alcohols are polar and hydrophilic but their carbon chain portion is nonpolar which make them hydrophobic . The molecule become hydrophobic as the carbon chain become longer. Pentanol is slightly soluble in water but completely dissolved in organic substances . So, pentanol is also hydrophobic .
1. C. Ans.
