Select one qualitative and one quantitative question that you are interested in investigating. Identify the independent and dependent variables. Next, create a hypothesis or set of hypotheses to go along with your research question. Identify your hypothesis as one of each of the four categories below and explain why your hypothesis fits into these categories .
Associative or causal
Simple or complex
Nondirectional vs. directional
Null vs. research
1. Qualitative Research
Question: HOW THE WORKPLACE EFFECTIVENESS AFFECT EFFICIENCY OF NURSING CARE?
Independent variable: Workplace effectiveness
Dependent variable: Efficiency of Nursing care
Hypothesis:
A) Effective workplace positively affect the efficiency of nursing care
B) Workplace effectiveness has no impact on efficiency of nursing care
C) Workplace effectiveness adversily affect the efficiency of nursing care
A) Effective workplace positively affect the efficiency of nursing care
a) Is this an Associative or causal hypothesis?
This is a casual hypothesis. Because this hypothesis predicts a cause and effect relationship between independent and dependent variables. This indicates the effect of independent variable (Workplace effectiveness) on dependent variable (Efficiency of Nursing care)
b) Is this Simple or complex hypothesis?
This is simple hypothesis. Because one independent variable with single dependent variable.
c) Is this Nondirectional or directional hypothesis?
This is directional hypothsis. Because it indicates the direction or nature of outcome derived from relationship between independent variable and dependent variable. If the workplace is effective in doing work, the efficiency of nursing care to patient will increases. This denotes a postive direction.
d) Is this Null or research hypothesis?
This is a research hypothsis because this hypothesis states that there is a relationship between the two variables being studied (one variable has an effect on the other). This is an affirmative statement.
B) Workplace effectiveness has no impact on efficiency of nursing care
a) Is this an Associative or causal hypothesis?
Infact this is a casual null hypothesis. Because this states the independent variable does not have any casual relationship with dependent variable, efficiency of Nursing care
b) Is this Simple or complex hypothesis?
This is simple hypothesis. Because one independent variable with single dependent variable.
c) Is this Nondirectional or directional hypothesis?
Actually this is a non- directional null hypothesis because it indicates no relationship between two variables. That means any kind of changes in workplace effectiveness does not affect nursingcare efficiency either positively or negatively.
d) Is this Null or research hypothesis?
This is a null hypothesis. Because it is a negative statement, and there is no relationship between independent and dependent variables. So there is no opportunity of research in it.
C) Workplace effectiveness adversily affect the efficiency of nursing care
a) Is this an Associative or causal hypothesis?
This is a casual hypothesis. Because this hypothesis predicts a cause and effect relationship between independent and dependent variables. This indicates the effect of independent variable (Workplace effectiveness) on dependent variable (Efficiency of Nursing care). Means, if highly effective work environment provided, quality of nursing care will be poor.
b) Is this Simple or complex hypothesis?
This is simple hypothesis. Because one independent variable with single dependent variable.
c) Is this Nondirectional or directional hypothesis?
This is directional hypothsis. Because it indicates the direction or nature of outcome derived from relationship between independent variable and dependent variable. If the workplace is highly effective in doing work, the care provided by the nurses will be less or poor. This indicates negativecdirection.
d) Is this Null or research hypothesis?
Eventhough it is in negative direction, This is a research hypothsis because this hypothesis states that there is a relationship between the two variables being studied.
2. Quantitave Research
Question: WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF BRADEN SCALE MONITORING IN PREVENTING PRESSURE ULCER?
Independent variable: Braden Scale Monitoring
Dependent variable: Pressure Ulcer rate
Hypothesis:
A) Braden scale monitoring result in decresed incidence of pressure ulcer
B) Braden scale Monitoring has no impact on incidence of pressure ulcer
C) Braden Scale monitoring enhances probability of Pressure ulcer
A) Braden scale monitoring result in decresed incidence of pressure ulcer
a) Is this an Associative or causal hypothesis?
This is a casual hypothesis. Because this hypothesis predicts a cause and effect relationship between independent and dependent variables. This indicates the effect of independent variable that is a monitoring/ experimental variable (braden scale) on the dependent variable (pressure ulcer) as outcome
b) Is this Simple or complex hypothesis?
This is simple hypothesis. Because one independent variable with single dependent variable.
c) Is this Nondirectional or directional hypothesis?
This is directional hypothsis. Because it indicates the direction or nature of outcome derived from relationship between independent variable and dependent variable. If the proper braden scale monitoring done, the risk of pressure ulcer decreased.
d) Is this Null or research hypothesis?
This is a research hypothesis because this hypothesis states that there is a relationship between the two variables being studied (one variable has an effect on the other). The reasech can conduct on this aspect
B) Braden scale Monitoring has no impact on incidence of pressure ulcer
a) Is this an Associative or causal hypothesis?
Infact this is a casual null hypothesis. Because this states the independent variable does not have any casual relationship with dependent variable. means whatever the braden score, it will not affect bed sore risk
b) Is this Simple or complex hypothesis?
This is simple hypothesis. Because one independent variable with single dependent variable.
c) Is this Nondirectional or directional hypothesis?
Actually this is a non- directional null hypothesis because it indicates no relationship between two variables. it states no use of braden scale in pressure ulcer prevention
d) Is this Null or research hypothesis?
This is a null hypothesis. Because it is a negative statement, and there is no relationship between independent and dependent variables. So there is no opportunity of research in it.
C) Braden Scale monitoring enhances probability of Pressure ulcer
a) Is this an Associative or causal hypothesis?
This is a casual hypothesis. Because this hypothesis predicts a cause and effect relationship between independent and dependent variables. This indicates the effect of independent variable on the dependent variable pressure ulcer)
b) Is this Simple or complex hypothesis?
This is simple hypothesis. Because one independent variable with single dependent variable.
c) Is this Nondirectional or directional hypothesis?
This is directional hypothsis. Because it indicates the direction or nature of outcome derived from relationship between independent variable and dependent variable. actually this is in negative direction. This hypothesis states that If the proper braden scale monitoring done, the risk of pressure ulcer incresed
d) Is this Null or research hypothesis?
This is a research hypothsis because this hypothesis states that there is a relationship between the two variables being studied (one variable has an effect on the other). The reasech can conduct on this aspect. can take the data of braden scale monitoring and the output, that is pressur ulcer cases reported.
