1. Introduction

Good Morning/Evening all,

Thank you for this opportunity to present my views to an esteemed audience. The year 2020 has been a real rollercoaster year for the world with impact of Covid 19. The pandemic has left no area untouched its wake and its impact has been severe in economy. GDP of most countries have crashed drastically with some falling more than 20% on a quarterly basis. Leading economists predict the worst is yet to come. Am sure everyone in this audienece would have either personally experienced or know someone who has been impacted by this turmoil. However as a student of economics I have been curious with a strange phenemenon in this case which is to do with rise and rise of stock markets amid this calamity. Let us delve into this issue in detail to gain a clear and coherent understanding.

2. Additional Points

  • Covid impact roiled the stock markets in March 2020 with almost all of them being gripped with panic. Indices fell more than 20% during the month
  • However stock market indices across the world has staged a significant turnaround from their lows of March 2020. e.g.NASDAQ of USA
  • Reasons for the recovery are multiple. Stimulus packages of central banks which pumped in billions of dollars of liquidity is major reason. These fund have found their way into stock market due to lack of better alternatives.
  • Another chief reason for rise in markets have been the coming of age of 'Robinhood Traders' i.e. newbie investors who trade on mobile phones. Lockdown and availability of time has fuelled investment by this segment of market participants.
  • Economists have pointed out that rise of markets from its lows in any case is not unusual and is to be expected. However the scale of the present recovery has left even the seasoned experts dumbfounded.
  • Huge amount of debt overhang across the economies of the world especially in case of Western part is a cause of concern. Printing of money has been resorted to by the central banks of USA, Europe etc which is only pushing the can down the road.
  • Actions of various stakeholders have created a cloud of uncertainity which may lead to even greater crisis in coming months.
