Which of the following causes changes to populations that are beneficial?
A) founder effect
B) natural selection
C) sexual selection
D) migration
Group of answer choices
A. Both A) and C) are examples of genetic drift
B. both C) and D) are examples of genetic drift
C. Both A) and B) are examples of genetic drift
D. B) and C) causes changes that are beneficial
E. all of these are things that cause beneficial traits
6.a.
Answer: C. Both A) and C) are examples of genetic drift
Explanation:
In bottleneck effect, a population drastically reduces to a significantly smaller size over a short period of time. This can result in radical changes in allele frequencies and is completely independent of selection. Thus the population experiences a genetic drift.
In founder effect, a new population develops by a few members of the original population. This causes a sampling effect as the genetic diversity in the founder population is drastically reduced. Hence, it is also a type of genetic drift.
Natural selection is different from genetic drift because populations that are best adapted to the environment are selected over the others. This takes several generations.
Migration is also different from genetic drift because it is the periodic departure and return of indiviuals to the same area
6.b.
Answer: D. B) and C) causes changes that are beneficial
As mentioned in the previous question, natural selection causes populations that are best adapted to the environment are selected over the others. Hence, it accumulates traits that are beneficial to the overall population.
Sexual selection is also beneficial because individuals one of the two sexes gets the chance of choosing their partners for mating. While doing so, they choose the best candidate for mating by selecting for characteristics that are signs of good health and vigour. As a result, healhier genes are selected over others and hence healthier offsprings are produced.
Founder effect and migrations are described above and neither of then give any benefit to the population.
