Antigen --- dependent activation of tissue mast cells that have specific IgE bound to their surface is the central event in acute allergic reactions. IgE, the immunoglobulin isotype with by far the lowest concentration in the circulation, is unable to fix complement and has little ability to cross the placenta. In allergic reactions, mast cells remain inactive until an allergen binds to IgE already coated upon the cell.
