In a population of 750,000, a total of 25,000 people died in 2019. Of these 25,000 that died, 40% were from cardiovascular disease. In total, 125,000 had cardiovascular disease in 2019. 1) What is the all cause mortality rate in 2019 per 1,000 people? 2) What is the mortality rate due to cardiovascular disease in 2019 per 1,000 people? 3) What is the case fatality % for cardiovascular disease in 2019?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer 1) Mortality rate can be defined as the number of deaths in a given population during a given period of time (generally one year). Mortality rate is normally calculated for one thousand or per thousand population.

Total population is 750000

Total death is 25000

Mortality rate is calculated per thousand of population during a given time period by the formula

(No of total deaths/ total population) X 1000

= (25000/7,50000) X 1000

=(25/750) X 1000

=25000/750

=33.33

Hence, all cause mortality rate is 33.33 (per thousand population) in year 2019.

Answer 2)

Now, contribution of cardiovascular disease related death is 40 % of 25000= 10000

Now, mortality rate caused by cardiovascular disease will be calculated in total population of 750000

=(10000 / 750000) x 1000

=1000 / 75

Hence mortalit rate due to cardiovascular disease is 13.33 (per thousand population) in 2019.

Answer 3)

The case fatality rate is known by calculating ratio of number of death and people affected with disease.

Here, number of people affected with cardio-vascular disease is 125000.

Whereas, number of deaths due to cardio-vascular disease is 10000 (calculated from 40 % of 25000 total deaths)

Case fatality rate = No of deaths  / No of people diagnosed with the disease

= 10000/125000

=10/125

=0.08

Therefore, the case fatality rate due to cardiovascular disease is 0.08
