what is the role of vitamin k in blood clotting?
Role of vitamin-K in blood clotting
Vitamin -K is a fat soluble vitamin and can act as cofactor. It is
mainly found in green leafy vegetables and some times it is
produced in the gastrointestinal tract of certain bacterias. It is
helpful for synthesizing certain proteins that can be used for
blood clotting. Vitamin-K have a key role in the coagulation
process, they will be convert the coagulation factors into their
mature forms. The vitaminK is not available, the clotting process
do not occur. For example, if a wound formed and bleeding occurs
ingest Vitamin-K they should be metabolized and then it should be
utilised for the synthesis of mature coagulation factor. Vitamin-K
is an important factor in coagulation cascade. Coagulation factors
like ll,Vll,lX,and X are important in the intrinsic pathway of
coagulation. Vitamin-K produces certain proteins such as protein-C,
S and Z. These proteins will degrade certainvcogulation factors, it
is helpful for preventing excessive thrombosis in the first
coagulation cascade.
Vitamin-K deficiencies cause impaired coagulation, excessive
bleeding and haemorrhage. So Vitamin-K is essential for the blood
clotting.
