A physician prescribes an otic suspension to contain 100 mg of cortisone acetate in a final volume of 8 mL. On hand in the pharmacy is a 2.5% cortisone acetate suspension.

a. How many mL of the stock solution are required to make this suspension? Your answer must include units (mL).

b. How many mL of normal saline (NS) will you use as a diluent? Your answer must include units (mL).

Solutions

Expert Solution

Since, it's prescribed to have 100mg of cortisone acetate in the final suspension, we will have to find the amount of stock solution that can provide this amount of the compound.

2.5% means there is 2.5g of Cortisone Acetate in 100mL of the Stock solution.

(a)Let the volume of stock solution required be V mL.

So, (2.5g/100mL)*VmL= 0.1 g(as 100mg=1g)

On solving, we get V=4mL.

(b) The total volume of suspension is 8mL and volume of stock solution is 4mL.

So, volume of Normal saline(NS) required(diluent)=8-4 =4mL.
