For the following procedure:

Nickel acetate added to a refluxing suspension of salen H2 in ethanol. Precipitated material collected via VACCUM FILTRATION (SUCTION). Product is N,N'-Bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediiminenickel(II), Ni(salen).

Question:
Why is the salenH2 filtered using vaccum filtration and not just gravity?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Vaccum filteration is faster technique than gravity filteration, used to seperate the solids from liquids. From gravity filteration technique you can seperate less amount of solids slowly but from vaccum filteration technique (via reduced pressure) you can seperate more amount of solids fastly. Gravity filteration technique is good for only small amount of solid and low boiling point liquid. For large amount of solid and high boiling point liquid vaccum filteration technique is best technique (It seperates fast). This is the reason salen H2 is filtered using vaccum filteration technique and not just gravity filteration technique.

When O2 is added to an anaerobic suspension of cells consuming glucose at a high rate, the rate of glucose consumption drops significantly as the O2 is consumed; the accumulation of lactate also ceases. First observed by Louis Pasteur in the 1860s, this effect is characteristic of most cells capable of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. a) Why does lactate cease to accumulate upon addition of O2? b) Why does the rate of glucose consumption decrease? c) What is the mechanistic...
