Diabetes mellitus is caused due to either

1: insulin deficiency(type 1 DM)

2: insulin resistance (type 2 DM)

Clinical Sign- polyuira

polydipsia

Polyphagia These three are classical triad of diabetes mellitus

Other clinical features are

Acute complication - diabetic ketoacidosis and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State

Infections unique to diabetes -

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis

Malignant otitis externa

Emphysematous pyelonephritis

Chronic complication-

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic neuropathy

Diabetic nephropathy

Treatment Goal:

To control blood sugar level within the normal range and prevention from complication due to diabetes

HbA1c < 7℅

Fasting blood sugar less than 100mg /dl

2 hour after meal sugar level less than 140 mg /dl

LDL <100 mg/dl

TG< 150mg/dl

Laboratory test :

* Blood sugar level - fasting and 2hours after meal

*Blood Hb1Ac level

*Serum LDL level

*Serum TG level

Some specific diagnostic procedure :

Oral glucose tolerance test is one of the important diagnostic procedure in which 75 gm of glucose is given to a patient after overnight fasting and then blood samples are taken
