Find (a) the angular velocity (rad/s) and (b) the linear velocity (miles/hour) of a person standing in Sylmar (latitude 34 degrees north on Earth). Take R of Earth to be 4000 miles.

Ans should be about (a) 7.27 X 10-5 rad/s    (b) ~ 900 mi/hr

Solutions

Expert Solution

a)
angular speed, w = 2*pi/T (here T is the time periode of earth)

= 2*pi/(24*60*60)

= 7.27*10^-5 rad/s

b) at latittude 34 degrees north on earth,

radius of the orbit, r = Re*cos(34)

= 4000*cos(34)

= 3316.1 miles

v = 2*pi*r/T

= 2*pi*3316.1/(24) mile/hr

= 868.1 mile/hr
