A prescription order is verbally given to a nurse by a
prescribing physician which contains the drug dose information to
be administered to the patient.
A prescription order can also be given by a physician to nurse over
the telephone.
While noting down the prescription the nurse should make sure that
the order is written clearly with use of standard terms and
abbrevations. This will help prevent errors in drug
administration.
If the nurse receives an order for one-half of a milligram for a
medication, it should be written as 0.5 mg. It should not be
written as 1/2 mg.
